I have Ubuntu 9th 04. Would it make sense to go to 9. 04, or just ditching this buggy OS and move less-buggy Debian.

  1. DKHM says:

All distros are buggy. You’re better off with the distro you’re familiar with. Debian just has different bugs. If you want total reliability, go with a corporate backed distro like SUSE (Novell), or Red Hat, and buy the tech support for it.

best bet is sticking with ubuntu as its the best supported of all the linux oses. buggy or not me…….i’d feel rather better/safe using a os thats more well known and supported.

ubuntu IS Debian made more user friendly.

Generally the basic software is very very stable – but anyting you can install with Debian will work with Ubuntu – but you can’t simply install Debian from a single liveCD and build it up so easily.

You could opt to try something like Crunchbang, which is extremely stable, Debian based.

Maybe your problems stem more from your hardware, or gnome desktop, or kde desktop – who knows.

Did you try openbox? it’s very stable. Generally most distro’s are very similar.

I heard that ARCH is ROCK SOLID – but you must know what you’re doing to use it, and I prefer aptitude in Debian.

What’s wrong with clearing a partition and doing a dual-boot DEbian install?

Are you fixed in the ‘Microsoft Way’ of ‘I MUST SWITCH’ instead of ‘well, I can try this, and this, and this -all at the same time – and use whatever I choose for whatever task’?

Personally I have my gnome-Ubuntu as my main system, but I play games on a dualboot XP, and sometimes I boot into openSuSe – though I don’t like YAST installer – and recently threw Fedora on a partition. They only need 20GB for a good trial, so why not experiment?

I heard that Mandriva is a wicked KDE environment, I’m going to try that next.
