I am in the second year EE major, just my first class, and want to get Linux on my laptop. I have used both Fedora and Ubuntu on old computers already, but since the scientific laboratories have comp here, CentOS, I was using the light. I decided to stay on Red Hat something, because that is what I use in the lab, but I can not decide between Fedora and CentOS.

Personally, I prefer Fedora. However, having the same distro as the lab could come in handy (especially if you’re interested in student work there in the future).
I suggest downloading both and creating LiveCD’s of each one. That way you can determine which suits your needs better

CentOS 5.3 Download

I am unable to comment on CentOS as I have not worked with it as yet but I have found Fedora 11 to be outstanding and by far the best release of the distro. thus far
