   linux is a kernal (very core of a operating system), but several operating system are made with linux (fedora, ubuntu, Suse, and a few hundred more) 220 linux OS are currently maintained as posted on http://www.linux.org http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html

   well there are many varieties of linux…

   beos
   os/2
   ms dos of course
   cpm
   vax vms

   symbian / win CE for PDA’s etc..

   to name but a few… but some machines have the operating systems built in..e.g. c64
